Pdfpen pro 9 vs. 811/3/2023 ![]() Microsoft Surface Pro 9 vs Surface Pro 8: Cameras ![]() Microsoft claims the SQ3 has new AI features that are made possible via a new Neural Processing Unit (NPU) capable of over 15 trillion calculations per second, but we'll have to wait until we test one for ourselves to really see how speedy it can be. The model with Alder Lake chips will definitely outperform the Surface Pro 8's older CPUs (by up to 50%, according to Microsoft), but the difference between the ARM-based Surface Pro 9 packing Microsoft's SQ3 SoC is likely to be much slimmer.īut while the ARM-based Surface 9 models with Microsoft's SQ3 processor likely won't perform as well as their Intel-powered siblings, they should be no slouch in the performance department. Microsoft Surface Pro 9 vs Surface Pro 8: PerformanceĪs noted above, the Surface Pro 9 comes with either a 12th gen Intel Core “Alder Lake” processor or a Microsoft SQ3 CPU powered by Qualcomm's Snapdragon tech. That means if you want to use the Surface Pro 9 with an external display or other modern devices that rely on Thunderbolt 4, you're better off with the version packing Intel chips. While it has the same complement of ports (plus a nano-SIM slot for connectivity), the USB-C ports are just USB 3.2, not USB 4, and they don't offer Thunderbolt 4 support. However, if you're leaning towards picking up the Surface Pro 9 with 5G you should know that it actually has slightly less to offer in the port department. The Surface Pro 8 (pictured) was light on ports, and the Surface Pro 9 is no different (Image credit: Tom's Guide) The Surface Pro 9 ships with basically the same complement of ports as the Surface Pro 8: 2x USB-C ports with support for Thunderbolt 4, a headphone jack and proprietary Surface ports for the charging cable and optional keyboard attachment. Regrettably, Microsoft didn't upgrade the port array on the latest Surface Pro. Microsoft Surface Pro 9 vs Surface Pro 8: Ports The 120Hz refresh rate on the display has long been touted as better for writing with a stylus because the screen feels more responsive (a side effect of it updating more often per minute and thus polling for pen input more often per minute), and Microsoft claims the custom G6 chip in the Surface Pro 9 enhances the screen's tactile feedback even further. ![]() However, under the hood Microsoft claims to have put in work on the software side that should make writing on the screen with the Surface Slim Pen 2 stylus (sold separately for $129) feel a bit more natural. Writing on the Surface Pro 9 with a Surface stylus should feel better than ever (according to Microsoft) thanks to some under-the-hood upgrades (Image credit: Microsoft) Microsoft hasn't changed up the design of the Surface Pro 9 at all, which isn't necessarily a problem since the design of the Surface Pro 8 is pretty solid. On the other hand, the Surface Pro 9 with SQ3 offers optional 5G connectivity (at an extra charge, of course), which is an improvement over the LTE wireless connectivity offered on the old Surface Pro X tablets. Of course, last year's Surface Pro X had a starting price of $899, so it's a little depressing to see Microsoft selling the ARM-based Surface Pro 9 for $300 more. The fact that there's now a version of the Pro 9 powered by Microsoft's ARM-based SQ3 processor for $1,299 likely spells the end of the Surface Pro X, which until now was the Surface tablet sold with wireless connectivity and Microsoft's SQ1 and SQ2 ARM-based chips. Right away we see a big difference from the Surface Pro 8, which was sold only with Intel chips at a starting price of $999. The Surface Pro 9 not only comes with Intel chips, it now also comes in a 5G version packing Microsoft's new SQ3 SoC.
